Shape and meaning intersect in this caligraphy-esque video sequence. Speed, or the tempo of the piece are adapted per screening in compliment with available sound and atmospheric qualities.

Drifted, I Was Looking For Flaws
Mairin Cooley
2011

Drifted is an experimental series of paintings represented through the medium of video responding to environmental factors created by light and architecture.

Drifted paintings are indeterminate landscapes focusing on ambient qualities that reach the subconscious rather than expressed directly.

Vancouver Riot Detox
June 2011

Video, dimensions variable

In colaboration with Drop Out Video Arts Society
With music by crystal dorval

In June 2011 downtown Vancouver was over-run by rioters taking advantage of the chaos and who selfishly destroyed our city’s reputation and property. It is important for us to reflect on these events inwardly and outwardly by occupying public city space to redirect the energy transmitted by such a destructive force.

The video serves as a reminder of a human tendency toward chaos and destruction (negative entropy) while using slow motion and low-fi video quality to sensualize the viewing experience more generally so as to not exploit the subjects captured on video.

PEACE - LOVING
Part 1 & 2

PEACE LOVING is an anthropological reading into the sacred everyday using a visual meditation process that collapses elemental life into cascading impulses. The language of visual poetry scans memory/time ringing out the ghosts of everyday action and gesture.

The artist acknowledges the source contribution of the performance by PEACE / LOVING to discover this course of reasoning abstract videography.

Video projection & the site specific make up the basis of Mairin Cooley’s public art practice. She has been organizing events at Lion’s Den project space since 2009 as well as activating locations around Vancouver for visual art, installation and performance collaborations
